Fuel consumption .. 16ms

Post by Taid »

Just reminiscing .. as you do ..

Back in the mid 50s, I had a 55 16ms and regularly travelled overnight from RAF Weeton, near Blackpool, to RAF St Eval in Cornwall. And vice versa

Google maps show it as being about 370 miles ..

I don't remember filling up on the way, and, in those days, how many petrol stations would be open over night ..

Surely I couldn't have done that distance on a tankful.

I know I'm not dreaming .. I did do the journeys ..

You may have done on the leg from Blackpool to Cornwall as on my map it's downhill all the way.
I used to regularly get about 75mpg from my 1954 G3LS but that only held 3 galls.

You must have read that in a manual, Thrifty, 'cos if you ever forked out for a tankful you wouldn't have been able to see the road through the tears.
'There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which taken at the flood............'

I guess I must have stopped to fill up, but can't imagine where ..

Thanks, folks, for your comments ..

Ps .. don't know how I managed to afford to run a bike at 4/6 a gallon and only earning about 18/- a day .. (SAC in the RAF)

I believe the 1955 petrol tanks were 3.75 gallons.

It must have been around a 10 hour journey, what comfort stops would you have taken?

Pass RAF Weeton once or twice a week, it's still there but a Army camp.
