This gearbox was already drilled for the hole further clockwise, a bodge I have used in the past, but did not solve the problem. Opening up a 'box that returned well I found the spring to be 6 turns rather than the 5-3/4 of the problem one. Fitting this spring allowed a full turn of preload, same as the one that worked, that solved the problem.
Others report the shorter spring so I don't know which is really correct, only what works.
Thanks everybody for the help & I needed a dose of humility.
Cheers, Don.

AMC gear box lubrication
I have run my Vincent 1000 and sidecar on 20|50 oil for 17000 miles instead of monograds as per the original handbook, with excellent results--also the gearbox ditto, I use 20|50 in my A.J.S. model 20--engine and gearbox, and tin chaincase [ a horrible devise] and see no reason to expect it to be any different than my Vincent--but that is just my humble opinion!! unless one does Enormous mileages it is difficult to be sure whether the oil is at fault or something else!! Just ride them!! Alan[Morini] Jennings.
