Dirty fuel tank
I have just picked up a Model 14 which has been stored for 24 years and needs restoration. The fuel tank is good externally but is contaminated with rust and stale fuel inside. Anyone know how to clean it out?

Get about 20 decent size nuts and thread them onto a circle of stout string. Place in tank with about a litre of paraffin, replace cap and walk up and down outside for about 10 mins shaking the tank vigorously from all angles. Empty and leave to dry.

I used strong hot caustic solution followed by strong phosphoric acid but there again what else would a chemist use.
p.s did a great job

First I did the nuts and paraffin (lots shaking), then nuts and strong phosphoric acid (lots of shaking) and once clean and nice and dry: epoxy coated the inside of the tank (the epoxy has to be liquid, like a 40 oil). The tank had been idle for 20 years, this method of removing all the sh*t cleaned it so thoroughly that a leak appeared, the epoxy solved that problem also.
Cheers

|I had ruff stone's in the tank (1 cm) 1/2 full and packed the tank in bubble plastic.
Than filled the dryer with a lot of towels with the tank in between and started the dryer without heat.
Clean as a wisthle !!!
