Magnetic speedo

Post by Ib-Denmark »

The speedometer in my 1965 G12 is rather unstable. The needle is pendling up and down,(The counter works fine) but when the bike has been standing in the sun it works OK.
The speed has only 4000 miles on the counter så I dont expect it to be worn out.
Can I clean it? Can I relubricate it?
Is it possible to dismantle it?
Regards
Ib

It sounds like an excess of lubrication is the problem, contaminating the magnetic disc . It can be cleaned but with care not to leave the parts that do do need lubrication, dry.

Just give it a dose of heat gun before each ride!

A dry cable will make a speedometer jerky. If it needs lube, don't grease the upper 1/4 to avoid it working up into the instrument. Cheers, Don.

OK.
Now it runs free after it has been soaking in kerosene.
But now the glass is dirty inside!.
Is it really not possible to remove the glass??.

Rinse it with white spirit, leave to dry, if you take off the bezel it will be damaged, but these are for sale on Ebay for about £12.00 with the glass and seal. Be carefull if you do remove the bezel as some of the printing on the faces is water soluble! Cable should protrude no more than 9/16 inch otherwise it will put pressure on the disc and failure will result.

I am now hooked on the grey face speedo in km/h from FEKED.COM
Has anyone got any experience with that?
