gear selector shaft
I have just renewed the O rings on my gear box and have reassembled it, I have noticed that the end of the inner shaft that comes through the splined shaft my selector lever clamps to has a 1/4 bsf tapped hole, when I purchased the bike there was no bolt present and as the bike was a non runner I have not had it on the road to try it out to see that my gear change is working correctly , I would like to know why this is tapped and what is the purpose of this? The bike is a 1961 model 14 250cc.

The gear position indicator screws into there and lines up against the corresponding gear no. marks on the outer cover.

Don't worry no oil will leak from the threaded hole. You can make an indicator very easily with a thin piece of alluminium.
