250 CSR Front Wheel Spindle

Post by Lubin »

Hello all

I am rebuilding a 1966 AJS 14 CSR basket case and one of the few parts missing was the front wheel spindle assembly (British hub with air scoops on the brake plate). After much searching I believe I have found one but still there are several problems as I have been unable to find any diagrams or parts lists for this hub, so here goes:

1. Have I got the right spindle? See the photo at:
http://www.poulton.org/ajs/spindle.png

2. If it is the right one, give me the bad news, any spacers, washers, seals etc missing, is there a dust cover that goes in the other side from the brake?

3. Can anyone give me the part numbers/manufacturers for suitable wheel bearings, or even just the dimensions?

4. Can anyone point me at a diagram that shows how it all fits in the hub/forks or even if someone could supply a sketch I would be most grateful.

5. Can anyone supply sizes of any missing bits or know of suitable substitutes from other models/makes.

Regards and thanks
Lubin

The wheel spindle looks very similar to my 1960 Model 8, if it is then there are lots of bits missing. I suggest you aquire a copy of the Bruce Main-Smith manual for your particular Year/Model because if it's anything like the one for my 8 then it will have an exploded view of the front hub assembly and list all the part numbers.

Good luck

Hi
Like you I am rebuilding a 1966 AJS 14 CSR. Each step is a challenge! Your spindle looks like mine, I have just removed all the bits from the hub and and it goes, from the 'tommy bar' end:
wide spacer
felt seal and holder
small stepped locating ring
large washer
bearing
bearing
large washer
small, stepped locating ring
felt seal and holder
narrow spacer
small washer
long nut
I have tried to attach a picture and can send more if you want

Hi

Thanks guys for the help.

Richard/Duncan, My hub is later than those you refer to and there does not appear mto be any parts lists available anywhere. There is a typed copy of on the archive at:
http://archives.jampot.dk/Book/Spares_l ... o_1966.pdf
Unfortunately there are pages missing

Strangely Duncan the link you give to the parts list is a scan of the actual one I bought off ebay a while back right down to the last dirty blob and crease. It may be that the spindle assembly is the same as the one in this list however the brake plate is different so I cannot be sure. A photo of my hub is at:
http://www.poulton.org/ajs/hub.png

StuBaker thanks for taking so much touble, I would love a pic, but the link does not work, if you could mail me a copy at lubin@poulton.org that would be terrific.

Thanks once again guys
Lubin

Hi

I now have sketches and dimensions of the missing spacers, many thanks to StuBaker.

Can anyone suggest a good place that will machine them up for me?

If there isn't any shoulders on the spacers then just cut up some water pipe!

Send me the sketches and I'll knock some up for you, no charge just bung a few quid in a cancer charity box.
