biggest effect on gearing?

what has the biggest effect on gearing? gearing down at the engine or gearing down at the gearbox ?? would 21 engine and 18 gear box be the same as 23 engine 16 gearbox?Thanks chrisEdited by - ajayrb on 07 Nov 2011 10:03:02 PM

I run a 23 tooth with 16 gearbox which suits me. But it also depends on clutch and rear wheel sprocket sizes. I think Amc clutches had different teeth count from burman chainwheels.

Thats what i should have done but i put 23 engine 18 gearbox so instead of stripping it all down was thinking would say 22 engine 18 gearbox be the same ratio as 23 engine 16 gearbox

Asuming all other gearing remains the same , then you can ignore them and just work on the two sprockets Engine and gearbox , one turn of a 21 tooth engine would equate to 1.166 turns at the final drive , ( 21 divide by 18 )
While one turn of a 23 tooth engine would equate to 1.438 turns at the final drive . ( 23/16 )
In other words the 23 - 16 combination would be higher geared

i see so a 22 engine 18 gearbox would be closer to 23 engine 16 gearbox ratio i want? . Thanks chris

Is it an Amc clutch or Burman? I'm sure they had a different tooth count.
