On my G3 it's for securing the speedo mounting bracket.

- the tapped hole is for the ( magnetic type )speedo bracket - only used on the CS scrambler .Edited by - T on 03 Jun 2012 09:34:02 AM

I think you will find that quite a few road models in the 1950s had their speedos mounted this way as well.

Most of 'em - 'Roadster' L/Wt's only had the speedo in the top of the H/Lamp bowl .
