Thanks Sam: A very nice article on the subject.
Don M. has provided the most important detail on the
whole subject: how to tell the pre '46 single starts from
the 2 start 46 and later pump plungers: The 2 start type have literally two worm gear beginning threads
exactly 180 degrees apart on the shaft, the singles only one . All my cranks are of the 2start variety except for one which I will not need to use.

Sam:
I t would be interesting to know which year your G80 is (was it '49?). And which pump and crank timing side spindle you use . I assume it is the 2 start like mine.
I have a 53 G80 now as well , and it must be the same according to this information(Bacon)

David, my G80 is a standard 49 with 2 start pump - I purchased new pump and timing side spindle from Russell Motors of Clapham Junction some years ago when I first had the engine apart.
The wire wound piston episode was the second time I had the engine apart.
cheers

Thanks Sam. I have two engines (Mod. 18's) I am putting together these days with as much care as I
can muster. I will let you know when they are together
how it went .
