Oh no - I forgot to open my anti sumping tap!!
I bought it !!,After a lot of thinking i have had a ajs 31 in the past and i wanted this particular model (Pref in ajs ,but like gold) so i bought with my heart not my brain.
The engine is fine i think, But the forks and clutch where totally buggered and needed total rebuilds,But i go up to the garage to say hello to the bikes before the milk's brought in

Oh no - I forgot to open my anti sumping tap!!
quote:
It's happened, something I thought I would never forget to do. I went out for a run on my 57 G11 today and was distracted whilst starting the bike so forgot to open the anti wet sumping tap. The tap had been fitted by a previous owner and I have never quite found the time to link it to the magneto...
After about 3 miles the bike lost power - I pulled the clutch in and coasted to a stop. I looked down and immediately realised what I had done. Perhaps foolishly I opened the tap, started the engine and checked for oil returning to the oil tank. When I saw flow I rode home slowly. The engine appeared to run a little rougher but nothing terminal.
I have drained the engine of oil and inspected the filters. There is some metal on the magnetic and felt filter but not any greater than at the last oil change. I am assuming the worse and am building myself up for a complete engine strip. Advice (and commiserations) would be gratefully accepted.
Perhaps I should start a small and exclusive club of folks who also made the same mistake....

This is my story too. You probably already solved the problem. I did not have luck (brain) and then after about 300 km I had destroyed bearing, bent left connrod, which almost broke through the housing. Now I am looking for parts and I consider what the cost will be Now think how to incorporate a safeguard against forgetfulness. I don't like automatic anti-return valves, breaking contact, on my magnet (Lucas E18) is almost impossible without major modifications. Does anyone have any idea?

Perhaps a very large bright yellow warning sticker on the top of the fuel tank?

As this miserable old reprobate has said soooo many times .....these devices are a disaster waiting to happen.
junk all of them, if you want a dry sump ride it more or drain the tank when stored for a long time.
