The spring's in the right place. The ball should be in the valve with another lighter spring as shown in the drawing.

Ahh, I see, excellent thanks Dave will order a spring.
Also speedometer drive/gearbox. It is very loose on the wheel with 3-4mm of sideways movement , is it a matter of simply tightening it with the nut shown (once fitted)?

It already looks tight to me. It will feel loose until you put the wheel back in and tighten the spindle nut. It'll be firm then.

Wisdom from the Jampot Editor is that the nut should be the first you undo to remove the spindle and the last you do up again, you may need to install the wheel first to loosen it as it sits on its own spacer. Theory is this helps prevent the rear wheel lockup that can also happen if other spacers and oil seals are incorrectly assembled.

Thanks Duncan, I don’t understand but perhaps it will all become clear when I fit the wheel When I received the bike the speedometer gearbox was waggling around on the axle so I’m not sure at this point if it’s even serviceable.

Before I lose the plot, can someone please confirm this is the Burman drain plug? Thank you.

I use SAE 50, never came out like that.
