poor running under load.

Post by bernard lee »

Hello, I am still struggling with my g2. It starts after a few kicks is slow to pick up though and when warmed up ticks over ok, on eccelleration though doesnt, just a banging in silencer and then it stops if the revs are not shut off. So far I have done the following. New coil, points, plug, condenser,ht lead, plug cap. I have also re-built the carb with all new parts. Stripped down the head re-ground in the valves, and visual examination revealed no gremlins with regard piston/ bore ect. I have all settings corect gaps/mixture. Any one got any idears as to what could be wrong ?????? before I give up and send it to e-bay. Regards Bernard.

Completely off the wall, fuel starvation?

Blockage in the fuel pipe or over the tap inside the tank allowing fuel through at a very slow rate, enough for tick over but quickly drains the float chamber when throttle opened.

Many years ago I had an escort that would run all day at 60 but if you went up to 70 it did 5 miles before it died, Wait 5 mins and you could go again. That was obstruction over the tank feed restricting the flow.

check ignition switch , the volts to the coil go through switch , certainly underload it would show up if everything else has been replaced
try powering directly .

Is your advance and retard mechanism working OK? If it starts and ticks over ok , maybe its not advancing properly.

Yes have inspected the auto advance mech and it appears to be working as it should.

Bernard, Whatever you do, don't give up on it, you WILL find the problem. As Dave says, are you sure the auto-advance mech. is working properly? You list what you have tried but don't mention checking the ignition timing, are you sure that is set correctly? Next, I'd strip the carb and make sure there isn't a bit of sh-t clogging a jet, fuel or air passage. Is the air vent in the fuel cap clear?
Keep us posted, someone will come up with the right suggestion.
Best of--
Robin.

Resister spark plug.

With ignition ON, what is the voltage at the coil.

What colour is the sparkplug? Do a plug chop.
