Lightweight Big End Failure

Post by Eddison5 »

The big end has failed on my newly acquired G2 250 CSR. Only done a few hundred miles since it was rebuilt. I am stripping the engine down now but might need to take it to a some one who can be trusted to do a good job. I live in Wilts - any recommendations?

Thanks for you time in reading this,

Ted

welcome to the seized big end club, ted. i've had 2 go on me, even after meticulous rebuilds. i'm a great believer in 2 and a half pints being totally inadequate, and looking at an external oil tank conversion for mine. i know it can be done.
cheers, bb.
ps, sorry not to be more helpful

WHY ??????????????????????////
MORE OIL is no use if it is not getting to the BIG END !!
Ther must be something "WRONG" ? somewhere to cause this to happen ?

Thanks for coming back to me. Just waiting for a timing pinion extractor then I will have the crank out. Will check for other damage and investigate the various oil ways for blockages - the pump was certainly pumping. Think I have found a local engineer who can do the crank, otherwise I see that the Club web site has advertisers. At least I am getting to see how this thing is put together - I keep telling myself!

hi ed, don't forget to take the pump out BEFORE the crankcases are split. not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but, just in case
rex - what would break down first in a hot engine? 2 and a half pints inside the engine or 6 pints in an external oiltank?
cheers, bb.

and lots and lots of model 14 and it's derivatives have seized up big ends. every single [scuse the pun] person i know that's had one of these bikes has done a big end. i've got 3 spare cranks in the shed - all of them seized, and for the cost of an old oiltank off some nondescript bike and a couple of feet of copper piping, that's the way i'm going to go. unless of course alpha now repair and rebuild big ends for nowt? more chance of james type forks winning a brilliant design competition.
cheers, bb.
