AJS 8 Forks

Post by kbonney88_LAPSED »

Hi all,

daft question.. but which size forks will be fitted to my 1961 AJS 8?? 1 1/4 or 1 1/8 ???

I am away from the bike at the mo.. and want to get a few bits for it..

- Once I know the size - I need a pair of the "Smaller" headlamp brackets (LHS & RHS) along with the Caps and washers.. - anybody help?

Kindest Regards,

Kevin

1 1/8" or 1 1/4" will tell you very little. They have to be pt. no. 043366 ( The mod 8 had 18" wheel ) Look at the parts list, theres more differnces than headlamp fittings, several differences from the 250 lightweight CSR even more differences to heavy weigth forks, that also changed over the years. So you need to get the correct forks or theres much work to do, if its possible to convert wrong forks.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the reply.. and yeh I agree.. hence my confusion.. Mmmmm....

- So, I will check the wheel, but from memory I think it is an 18" wheel.. will look tonight if I get chance..

However, regarding the bike and forks - the bike is together, and they look like the correct forks... (they look familiar - I had a 14CSR) - the problem that I have is that someone has made a "modification" to the bike by removing the headlamp brackets in the past, and making and fitting some crappy chrome cafe racer things instead that mount the headlamp - that look terrible - really crap.. lol...

So, it looks like all that is missing are the top headlamp brackets and caps ??? hence, me asking about size fittings..

They look the same from memory as the forks from my 14CSR that I had years ago... So, am I to assume that the brackets are the same as the 14CSR brackets??

So - All I want to do is re-fit the brackets and caps.. what do you reckon?

regards, Kev

Think I have got my head round it now - 1 1/8 Forks...

I will confirm the wheel size - then speak to AMC spares regarding second hand bits....

and see where we go from there.. lol.. :-)

The 250 csr had 17" wheels, 350 18", the forks were simular to the 250 CSR , but, the parts list will show which parts differed.

I see at least 7 parts differ for mod 8 from the CS, 8 if you include one part that is l/H or R/H on mod 8, but are handed on the 250 CS,
you may also need to check Matchless differences between 250 G2 CSR and G5

Hi again all..

and sorry to be a pain - need more info please...

I have located a pair of Fork Head Tube Cover, as seen in the Photo attached..

- but as you can see - I have only 1 top and bottom Cap though..

- So, I am trying to get hold of 1 more of each cap..

- the parts numbers as per the AJS 8 Parts list are as shown in the Photo

-- these are - top cap = 010703, Bottom cap = 018215

- I can get hold of a pair of tops (010703) from the AJS OC spares, however, I am having no luck with the bottom caps.. - anyone any ideas?

--- Are they the same as any other models?

- the dimensions (with a ruler) of the bottom caps are as follows - 9/16 high x 1 1/4 Small hole x 1 15/16 large hole..

*** are these dimensions the same as the bottom caps for the 1 1/4 Forks??

Kindest Regards,

Kevin

Hi I may have a pair of used bottom caps you can have which came off my model 8 1" and 1/8" I have just checked my parts list and they appear to be the same for model 8 and 14CS and are the part number you mention. Come back to me and in the meantime I will check
