I've just purchased an S3 but I'm having trouble finding the serial numbers. Any one have an idea of where theyr might be situated?

Quite a rare machine,1931 AJS 4.98 h.p. transverse v twin . shaft/chain drive.
It would be interesting to know the serial numbers which should all match, please look for a 6 digit number starting 15.
Look on the crankcase, the left hand side below the barrel was normal place for a single and mod 2 v twin.
As the S3 c/cases are turned 45 degrees, maybe look at the front or back below / midway between the barrels
Look for the frame number on the right hand side at the end of the tube running under the pertrol tank. Thts below the sadle just above the oil tank filler cap. Also look for the number on the gear box. I would like to know what numbers you find, if theres anything else you would like to know of literature etc, please contact me on prewar@jampot.com some photos would also be nice to see.

I never spotted the picture in photo's Clive, nice bike. Like Rex, this is a machine I would love to own.
A few years back Jim asked me about one that was for sale at Kettering. That was in original condition,
it was in the showroom for quite some time.

I could only afford a front wheel Rex, then went and sold that to Sammy Miller.

I would like to buy a 1931 AJS S 3 and I have read with a great interest where to find the identifation numbers on the frame , engine and gearbox .
The seller told me that it's a very rare bike and that only seven are supposed to survive !!!
Please can you tell me how many of them have been built and how many of them are still existing in your opinion ?

No idea how many were made. AJS of Wolverhampton never survived 1931 although the 1931 model year ended Aug 31st 1931 before the company folded, approx start frame number is known to be 150020 but no last frame number. Which would had given some idea of numbers produced. Could you tell me the frame number of the S3, that may give another clue of numbers produced. I am only aware of frame number 150042 surviving. That's the only one I have been informed of. The S3 was the last new model produced mid 1931 model year and used the last series of frame numbers. I am only aware of about 10 S3's that survive. But there's no way to get everyone in the world that own's one, to let me know.

The frame n° is : S 150414 . Do you know something about the availability of spares regarding the engine and transmision ?Some adress of a specialist ?
