Hi,
I have started trying to sort out all my Matchless and AJS bits as over time and a few house moves they all seem to have managed to land up together. Mixed up in all of the bits are the makings of a 1937 G3 Matchless. I have assembled the bottom end of the engine but when I tried to build the cylinder head I found that the hairpin valve spring retaining plates would not sit properly on the head. On further inspection I noticed that the head was from a 1937 AJS which I believe was fitted with coil valve springs. As the hairpin springs are a distinctive feature of the Matchless I would prefer to fit them if at all possible. Does anyone know if the Matchless and AJS heads are similar enough to machine the fins on the AJS head to allow the hairpin springs to be fitted?
