I would appreciate any advice on a 1922 model D V twin regarding :-

1 What spark plug type should be used, it is 18mm thread.

2 Should all the fastenings be nickel plated, presently on the mudguards and engine plates etc, they are black.

3 What is the spares situation like, any suppliers you can recommend.

some fittings were nickel some painted, your parts list may give clues to the finish of a particular fitting. There is a 1932 AJS parts list which is actually a list of all older AJS parts passed on to Plumsted at that time. As you can imagine that's a lot of years ago plus a world war, so you are unlikely to find any parts other than hunting auto jumbles for S/H bits. As the era is a very small market, also consider repro spares available as zero. Unless you see a part no. starting STD, if so drop STD and add enough zero's to prefix the numbers to make a 6 digit number e.g. STD 1 becomes 000001 then check that 6 digit number with club spares. You could also check the 1954 parts list book that coverts old pt, numbers to new. This will show dimensions and sizes of the STD prefixed parts.

To your second question, I have four photos attached.
(Out of original prospekt 1919, out of prospekt 1921 with finish description, and two from my own bike)

Your first question is not easy to answer, but:
In a spares list is written:""Sparking plug ......."Sphinx"4/- or K.L.G. No.205 ""
Maybe you can encrypt or someone else's.
My bike has been running after restoration 17.000 kilometers.
And so I go cruising speed on the highway 80 km / h.
I have two different spark plugs mounted.
Rear a Bosch DM95T2 and forward a Bosch DM145T2.
These are old NOS spark plugs, which can be disassembled.
Today's designation would be: Bosch M10A (95er) and Bosch M8A (145er).
And of course, these are 18 mm spark plugs.

Since a replacement tube is wound about the handlebar.
In a leather case, closed with a buckle.
(Below you can see sticking out the valve.)

I suggested Green spark for a plug as they will probably advise you of a suitable plug to use, based on what plug WAS correct. A correct plug in 1922 will not be so good using 2015 petrol. You only use 1922 literature, or what ever is correct for the parts your bike is made of, 748 cc changed to 799 cc in 1921 Also 1922 799 cc bike was 30 pounds in weight heavier than 748 as it had some different parts.
Clive in days of old there were many " must have " extras for the old bikes for touring etc. there was not that many garages selling parts. see pic fitted with the basic must have extras.

My has also been the crankshaft and cylinders for 799ccm.

yes, I saw that on the island Bornholm (Denmark) at a very old NIMBUS.
And a tube for beaded edge tires can not be found also on every corner.
So I must have !
