I had a rubber washer on the end of my filter and assumed that it was there to seal of the end of the filter unit to ensure the oil went through the filter without any seepage. Left it in and had no issues for years.

Under OIL FILTER (in engine) in the parts book, page , it lists 042846 Ring sealing, oil filter and at 3d would seem about right fora rubber ring.
It also lists 042065, washer, oil filter housing cap, at 6d

Hi Mark, maybe you can help me actually, when you took out your filter was there a rubber washer right at the bottom of the filter tunnel (you would need a torch to check as if there is it would probably stay there) Only there was on mine and I don't think it should be there as I cant see anything in the manual. I removed it when I fitted the later filter

Thanks everyone, if I ever manage to get the original filter back then I will use a rubber washer down the end of the filter tunnel
