Having pretty much got the engine sorted now, it only needs re-assembling, I had a look at the gearbox... 
I couldn't turn either the input or output shafts so I figured that there might be a problem... I'm quick like that!!
It didn't come apart without a fight and this is what I found.
It actually looks a lot worse that it is. Having cleaned it all up, the main components aren't in bad condition, considering. All the small coils springs are shot as are the ball races but the gears and plain bearing bushes are all serviceable. The gears have a little surface rust but most of that cleaned off with a small rotary wire brush.
