My model 18 AJS first registered in March 1949 has a flat topped petrol cap. The parts manual shows the piecrust cap for that year. Is it possible that the factory started using flat top bayonet fittings as early as 1949 , or has my bike been fitted with a later tank? I have bought a piecrust cap , which of course will not fit the tank.

1947 was the last year for the petrol tank and 1948 for the oil tank, parts pictures were not robustly updated but the part number usually was.

They were Matchless caps, but used early post war on AJS. Probably just to use up old ex WD Matchless stock and / or until the factory got fully back to producing both marques . They would have also had to match up with oil and petrol tanks. Prewar Matchless had pie crust oil tank cap. AJS had just plain with very slight dome cap.
