G5 Rear Damper

Hi All - I'm just about to start to re-build the rear suspension having had the covers chromed and dampers sprayed up and new bushes. When I extend the damper piston I get resistance but when I push the piston back in there is much less resistance, although I can hear the oil being pushed through the valves. There's no sign of any leaks and both of the rear dampers operate the same - is this ok or do I need new ones? Cheers
