Hi
Please can anybody tell me why an X is in my engine number as in G12X 6921 I would think its there for a reason the bike is a 1961
I thought perhaps it was for export or something
Cheers Ray

It appears the Matchless twin engine number series re started with 1956 G11 at 101 prefixed zero ( = 0101 ) This series appeared to run on to G12 until it reached 09999 towards the end of the 1959 model year. The number series then re started again pre fixed X. The numbers also shared with AJS.

Thanks ROB
For your reply Re the X in the Engine number .I have just bought a 1961 G12 to restore .I am an Essex boy from way back, came to Auz back in 1970 in the 60s, As lad I bought and rode a new Matchless G12 CSR from Pride & Clarks (dealers ) also a second hand AJS model 31 CSR after over revving my loverly new machine and shot all the cam followers to pieces, fixed it up and thenI must have put back a damaged push rod as i seized it up on my way back from a trip from Cornwall.it was never the same after that but loved the bikes Any way couldn't resist playing with another one ,before I fall off the Perch
Cheers Ray
