At the risk of being accused of changing the subject...
Thanks to the people that answered my questions, nobody has come forward with any negative comments about bar end mirros so that this the way I shall go.

Bar end mirrors are the bee's knees. Minor quibbles include having to move your head instead of just your eyes, if you try to adjust them on the move they eventually come loose - carry a spanner or Allen key and they tend to clash with car mirrors when filtering through stationary traffic. The factory fitted ones on my W650 are useless, on a straight road you have to move your arm to see to the rear, on easy left hand bends you have to move your whole body. Would advise only one bar end mirror.

Your what are great Stuart? - bar end or stalky, if the latter you are either a skinny bugger or you have a hole in you shoulder. On the W650 the mirror extends level to the end of the grip, with my gear on my shoulders are as wide as the bars, add to this elbows out slightly in Eric Chitty fashion and one has to move to see behind.

I had a problem seeing past my elbows on my ZZR600 and always cursed the mirrors as useless. Then my old Heine Gericke jacket wore out and as it had been so good I bought another. The updated version had 'soft' armour in the elbows instead of the earlier 'hard' armour. Suddenly I can see what is going on in my mirrors
And the bar end mirror? Fab and groovy and everything Alan says is correct (Depressing how he is always so right isn't it?)

...nearly forgot, there is one drawback though. If you haven't got a centre stand, and your side stand is out of service and you need to get off the bike and leave it, you cannot lean the bike against a wall to the mirror side. You would then have to turn the bike 180 degrees in the horizontal plane to get a mirror free side next to the wall. IF you haven't fitted mirrors both sides, that is. THen you're really in trouble!....
