You're right-it was hard work and they're still spongy!
My next task is to attempt to fit the shiny new centre stand I bought last Sunday at the Witham Autojumble from Mr Bellett I've given it a lick of Smooth Hammerite, not that it's going to rust with the self lubricating system built in as standard to the bike...
I will probably place an order for the super duper easy roll on ones at some point, but for now this will be an improvement on what's fitted.
I realise it's been done to death, but has anyone got any tips on the easiest, painless method of replacing the centre stand on my late '57 M16 please?
It looks straightforward enough, but reading some posts it appears it could be a little frustrating.

Count all of your fingers. Connect the spring, put the stand in the closed position, hold it steady with a large tyre lever, feed the bar through the rails and sleeve (if you have one). Tighten up then re-count your fingers. I'm assuming your frame is the same as mine '57 Girling.

Thanks for that Chris. Yes it is the same as yours. That sounds far too easy! I feel more confident now. How is do I tension the spring though, that looks like the difficult bit?
I'm glad my car is an automatic-it means I can drive to A&E with one hand...

I started by typing 'Centre stand fitting' into the search facility, it currently brings up 109 results to peruse.
Cranking up the spring and retaining it with hose and hose clips is the safest in my opinion, para cord and a lever for the adventurous.

There is a help file on this which describes the spring as a "bomb" so make sure you wear gloves.
I hooked the spring onto the engine plate first and let it dangle.
Feed the stud through the frame outer, (exhaust side) stand, spring and primary side outer. At this point the lower part of the spring is on the wrong side and not tensioned. The stand should be in the open position.
I then got a long tyre lever and skewing the long end of the spring diagonally invite it to move to the other side. It may initially decline the invitation but brute force will win. It would be prudent to wrap some tape around the lower bar to help prevent scratching.

That's brilliant Chris. I haven't even looked at what was involved yesterday as it was a bit chilly after pressure washing it. I didn't know where it hooked into on the engine.
I will attempt it soon. What I also realised is that as I have a fatter tyre (3.50-19) than the original 3.25 the stand might not be as effective as well.
I am also waiting for the haemorrhoid smooth paint to dry properly.
That's my excuse anyway! I won't put it off indefinitely.
