Word on the street is that you'll have to spend around $U.S. 500 for a decent original one. :(

That'd be about right for good working example. The side trip speedos are becoming very hard to find.

I cannot find a pre 1954 smiths reference list. Does anyone know if a smiths S.546/3/L speedo would work ?

The catalogue referred to above is for 54 on speedos rather than the 49 one thats being sought. I think i had the smiths catalogues uploaded to the archives and i had nothing before 1954. The list does show the 546 speedo as fitted to the BSA gold star which suggests it may be overpriced. The trouble with answering the question would a 546 be suitable is twofold. Firstly someone like me may have worked on the speedo and replaced a damaged or faded face with a secondhand one. Not much consideration may have been paid to the registration numbers on the face as the 120 speedos all have the same scale. So you cannot be sure of the ratio. Secondly i have never been able to track any logic to the Smiths numbering system which explains what the ratio is from the model number.
