I was given a side/kick stand with my 1949 AJS and I now have the correct spring however I am puzzled to how it fits. The lug on the frame is present so I can bolt the side stand on. Its the spring I am struggling with .

There are (should be) two holes in the bottom right hand frame rail. Use one and the stand will stay down, use the other and it will kick up when the bike is upright.
Have a look at this previous post:

Spriddler,
I checked out the pictures from previous posts and still i am stumped. the 49 model 18 frame down tubes are different than the later tubes. I do not want to have to take paint off to find them . Does anyone have a same year and model that can give me a measurement so i can locate
Thanks

I gave up trying to find the spring holes on my 52 G80 rigid. A small right angle bracket on one of the lower engine studs on the right hand side did the trick. I have it so the stand stays down as I have found that a gust of wind when parked can cause it to spring up, also a nudge in the garage.
