No. I'm going to test the coil with the multi-meter. It could be that the powerbox and ET coil are incompatible. The wiring diagram does show a regular coil. Perhaps the ET coil performs best with a condenser and zener set-up? You never know could just be a naff connection on the HT lead. All will be revealed.

Having just tested the ET coil across the + and - it's showing 1.6 ohms and 6.49k ohms between + and the HT cap. My understanding is it should be twice that. The ad on fleabay did say suitable for both 6 & 12 v although I'm starting to question that.

So replace the alternator with a battery - what happens then?

This may be stating the obvious, but if you want to "replace" the alternator with a battery, you need to do it on the "DC" side of the regulator/rectifier and isolate both the regulator/rectifer and the alternator.

I reckon the answer to the spark problem is the ET coil. The Boyer site says for use with original / standard coils. Ordered and winging it's way as I type.
