I am in the process of making a new gearbox for my g3l 1941 The old layshaft gears have brass bushes but i have bought a new old stock layshaft and one new gear which did not have a brass bush in it . The problem is they only fit the new shaft without the brass bushes and they are a good fit and both cogs have oiling holes so are they ok to fit without bushes. thanks

I believe (but stand to be corrected) that the early CP gearboxes did not have 2 bushes on the layshaft and so the gears ran directly on the shaft. By 'early', I mean around the war years and so your NOS layshaft is correct for the year. Sometime in the later 1940's the layshaft moved, I think, to the 2 integral bushes.

The later layshaft and gear arrangement is easier to source replacements as they are more common. I have built up a hoard of Burman bits over the years and I think all my bits are the later type although I haven't been thorough in sorting them!
