Does anyone know how to dismantle a speedo,I have removed the two securing screws at the back but the casing wont budge , does it pull off? or does it the chrome facia ring unscrew from the casing. also the glass is cracked is there company's out there specialising in speedos.

Hi

Those screws retain the mechanism in the case, you need to unscrew the chrome bezel from the front, remove the glass and the mechanism will lift out.

(Hot water or a hot air gun on the bezel will make removal easier )

Plenty of places will supply bezels, glass and seal - search around for the best value,

Depends on the type of speedo . early chronometric ones unscrew , later magnetic ones are crimped on
Yes loads of people can replace glass for you . try Dudley (Essex Section) if that's all you need doing otherwise most will want to restore it as well

I may well have missed the obvious here

But having found speedos 'hidden' under 'Electrical' the bezel is not listed - yep it's there if I search by part number but not everyone will arrive armed with a PN.

Don't need a part number, type speedo in search box, brings up everything related . I have however moved the 2 items into the instrument category, I must have missed them when moving stock into the new categories. There may well be other items as well.

Am I missing something here?

The original poster has stated that the glass is broken, I don't see the glass being listed as an available item on the AMOC Spares page?

With regard to unscrewing the bezel, which anyone who's tried it knows can range from Really easy to Almost totally impossible without the use of a small thermonuclear device , if you search on the forum and the wider internet I think there are various threads offering advice and possible methods, I'm sure I've recorded my experiences somewhere on here which can be summarised as penetrating oil, heat, suitable strap wrenches, a good dollop of "engineering sympathy" and a large box of patience.

I used to fix the chronometric speedos for club members. My method to remove the screw on bezels was to put them in a poly bag in the freezer for a couple of days, having made a bracket to hold them in a vice before I started (if it is the type mounted in s headlight shell the up turned u bracket serves very satisfactorily). After two days take it out of the freezer, mount it in the vice and with the second best leather gloves wind it off. If that does not work and it did for 9 out of 10 then I simply cut it off.
There appears no logic as to why this should work very much better than heating it as the bezel is brass and the case steel. My only thought is that the different contraction rates result in the rust that is jamming it being crushed. Final thought if painting the case with the bezel in place do not set it to dry face down. The danger is the paint will creep and be drawn into the thread by capillary action. I always had to cut the bezel off in that case.

I must have been lucky with my speedo bezel. I stretched the wrist part of a rubber glove over it, then used a pair of oil filter pliers on it. It wasn't easy, but it did come undone.
