G80S 1953 wheels

Post by Rickdaviesr »

Hi
I have a G80S 24 September 1953 build project which came with three wheels, the front wheel hub is a full width one and two rear wheels one is full width the other cotton reel. Can anyone tell me which would be the correct one to match the front.
Much appreciated.
Regards
Rick

Welcome, Rick.
It'll be a cotton reel.
See the illustration on page 64 of the 1953 Owners Manual here:

All factory manuals for your bike can be found under 'Books' here:

Is your 24th Sept 1953 date the date of manufacture from a dating certificate or the date of first registration? Bikes that left the factory and sent to dealers after 1st Sept 1953 were 1954 models. both 1953 and 1954 models had the cotton reel rear hub. However, 1953 models had a single-sided front hub and 1954 models had a full width alloy front hub.

Quick note .. there are two patterns of front wheel full width hubs .

The 54 is basically a drum with grooves turned into it, as in the illustration ... Later ones have raised fins, similar to the full width rear hub ..

Now sold ... 1956 AJS 16MS Bitsa .. HSU 414 .. rebuilt/re-registered 1987
