OK here's another question from the electrical idiot.
How do I test the ammeter when it's off the bike ?
Can I just link it + and - in series with a 6v battery or will that blow it up? The reason I ask is because there seems to be a bit of melted plastic just a bit below where the needle sits . It seems it may have suffered a bit of electrical trauma in the past and I would like to test it .
I am rebuilding this bike so not at the point of being able to test anything yet.

If you are connecting it to a battery you need to include some resistance in the circuit or you will blow it. Put a headlight bulb in the circuit and you will be ok.
