Yes newspaper is roo thick. Invest in the specialist timing device otherwise know as a packet of Rizla red.

Eddie, sounds like you sussed out the problem and she’s back running well, great news. I have also used the fully retarded 1/8th inch BTDC method in the past to set timing but now prefer to set at 7/16 with the ATD wedged open. Cheers

Spriddler, yes the manual I have says that the timing can be set to 1/8" btdc in the fully retarded position. I looked at the weights and indeed they are together. On a rainy day I will wedge them in the fully advanced position and check the timing that way.
