Fuel and Additives for old bike?

Post by DRC »

I have just purchased a 1960 Matchless 250 and in the process of doing it up, just wondered about what fuel and additives to use, obviously not E10, but is there something i need to put in with the fuel to stop the valves burning?

most don't bother with additive , especially for the small mileage everyone is riding . personally ive not used it on any of my bikes that date from 1927 to 1969

Thanks for the response, just one other thing i have noticed, there is no lever for the valve lifter that i have seen on other models, i have looked at the head and cant see where it would fit either, some heads seam to have a hole and spring near exhaust valve but mine doesn't seam to have this, any ideas on this one, should it be there? and where abouts should it go.

Cheers for the help

Hoping to go to Kempton on Saturday to pick up some bits.

all the best

Hi,
Re additives to petrol. To use or not to use? I decided I would use additives only because I’d read that it was a ‘good idea’ with modern fuels and, for what it costs, worth the trouble.
I use ‘Liqui Moly’ lead substitute which was recommended to me by some classic car enthusiast friends of mine. Like the previous contributor said it might be superfluous if only doing low mileage. Time will tell!
As for advanced retard lever. I’m not conversant with the 250cc but the G3LS (350) would have the Automatic Advance Retard mechanism ( no need for a manually operating lever ). I think your model will be the same.

If you take a moment to look at your Spares List page 7 you'll see that the lifter was only fitted to the G2CS and the G5 models.

As for advanced retard lever.
David's asking about the valve lifter lever, not the A/R lever (which it wouldn't have anyway).

Ooooooops! Another Senior moment I seemed to have experienced! Sorry, you’re quite right. I’ve been reading up on timing and my brain must have locked up. It seems to have reset itself now!
Anyway, David now has some additional information whether it was needed or not! 😝
