Switching to encapsulated stator

Post by Anders Welle »

Hello all,
I intend to convert my alternator twin from the old open coil type to the newer encapsulated stator, and have 2 questions:
Will I need a different spacer behind the rotor for correct stator alignment? I understand the newer stator is thinner.

Secondly, has anybody fitted the 3-phase 47252 stator instead of the 47205 single phase? Both rated 10A but the 3ph gives better charging at low revs.
I wonder if this type will fit straight in mechanically? I understand the clearance around the fixing nuts is more restricted on this type.

Of course a new reg/rect is needed.

Regards,
Anders

ive used both types , 3 phase Lucas on my G80CS and new podtronics rectifier unit to suit , and on other bikes single phase Lucas stators without issues . all have been a direct swap . I think only very early ones were different
ive always used existing spacers

Thank you Peter, that is reassuring. Guess I will order the 3ph.
