Steven, thanks for responding and giving insight into the differences that can trip us up. Admittedly I had no idea the twist grip was the original one and needed a specific cable which was last replaced some nine years ago with one the PO supplied with the bike and which still functions. I will keep in mind the difference for future reference, meanwhile hopefully the modified one will serve if needed.
