Oil on the floor, again!

Post by Lassenc »

Hello!

After coming home from vacation, the bike has been standing still for two weeks, and emptied half of the oil on the floor.

Originally I thought this was due to the chaincase, but as there isn't any oil in there at the moment, it can only be from the engine.

It is a bit soiled underneath the engine, and "drips" forming around, and drips from the breatherpipe.

I had the oilpump refurbished with a layer of hardchrome reamed down to the hole in my crankcase, but still!

What can I do?

The bike is a Model 18 '53

Oil on the floor, again!

The referenced article describes an obscure source of an oil leak. The oil lines were very old & cracks developed. As they are under the gearbox they are hard to inspect. New oil lines solved the problem.

It is a tip well worth checking out.

Cheers, Don.

Mine are made of metal, and I haven't noticed any leaks from there.

It's a thorn in my side, really!

Only EP oils smell of cat's pee, and I don't think Lasse has this in his gearbox.

Unless he has been careless with the hosepipe, oil from pressed steel chaincases will not be white, aluminium alloy probably, due to condensation.

Apart from turning down chrome plated sockets, I have little experience of machining chrome, It's blooming hard. I can't quite see that reaming a hard chromed bore would be successful. Was the pump plunger a good fit after this treatment? You say there was no oil in the chaincase, is there oil now?
