G11 Carb

Post by Tolly »

Hi chaps and chapesses, just a brain pick if I may.
The book says I should have a 376/58 Amal carb on my '57 G11 but in fact it's a 376/288 all jetted up by the book. The question is can anyone tell me what the difference is between the /58 and /288 as I can't find any info when doing a search.

Amal 376/288 was originally fitted to Norton 88 & 650 SS. However when correctly jetted will suit your bike perfectly. The number after 376/ only indicates the factory jetting.

Thanks Michael, I have jetted as specified but seems to hunt a little on tickover which I can't seem to cure, mixture screw makes little difference, it's fine through the rest of the range though.

Many thanks.

Thanks "Dugless" I have gone through the basics several times. It's strange, when I purchased the bike it was a non-runner tucked up in a garage for 12 years but all original. I had the mag rewound (to obtain a spark) and it ran like a hammer drill on the back of a JCB, I thought it was going to break up the drive I had to strap it down to stop it wandering off. Having re-timed the valves and re-jetted the carbs etc. it runs a treat all except the tickover. I may try a higher # slide to see the difference.

Does it do the same thing without airfilter attached? Try experimenting by covering the carby partially with your fingers. Does it make it worse or better? Douglas

I have no air filter fitted and it makes little to no difference if I partially cover the intake, hence my thought on a bigger cut-a-way slide.

Thanks for your input.

Hunting on tickover could be because of a worn slide. Have you checked that?

Yes, I put one of the chrome ones in when I re-jetted. I think I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new carb.

Thanks for your suggestion Michael.

Changing the slide only fixes half the problem. The carb body itself is worn as much as the slide. See in Jampot, there's an ad from a guy that fixes them. He did one for me and did an excellent job.
