G12/Model 31 alternator cranks....

Post by CAB »

Hello all.
Hopefully a couple of simple questions.....
Would all alternator G12/Model 31 cranks be made from nodular iron?
Can you use an alternator crank in a dynamo equipped engine i.e. are the cranks interchangeable?
How can you tell the difference between the two cranks?
Thanks

nodular cranks were introduced mid 1961 so it depends on the year
alternater cranks are not realy interchangeable with the dynamo cranks because of the length and design at the drive end to mount the alternater.I do believe though that alternater cranks can be modified to fit dynamo engines but not vice verca.
some noddy cranks were stamped N others were not.
some were marked with yellow paint at the factory.
When struck with a hammer a noddy "rings"
whereas a non noddy (meehanite)breaks in half, sorry gives off
a dull thud. Also (getting more technical here) if a filing is taken off a noddy crank it has a strong sulpher (eggy) smell
hope all this nonsense helps

I've done it the other way round and used a dynamo crank in alternator cases. Rusells used to sell an extension bar that screwed into the end of the dynamo crank to hold the alternator.
