Peter- fit the down pipe in the head without the front bracket and rotate the pipe. Clockwise and the horizontal part of the pipe moves away from the frame rail and upwards too. Rotate the pipe anti-clockwise and it gets closer to the frame and drops closer to the ground.
At some rotational point it will also be parallel with the ground and line up with the silencer.
The front bracket should line up at this point but it may not be the correct length - for the pipe bend you currently have. It is not hard to knock up a pattern bracket that looks right but is now the correct length for a slight variation in pipe bend - assuming it is not too far out.
You may have tried all this, in which case, do what Don suggests!
