You could have saved all that fuss and rechecked your valve clearances first!! As you didn't find anything else wrong!

If the bike is now starting and ticking over well then it seems you did time it on the correct stroke.For future reference turn the engine over and observe the inlet(rear) pushrod rise and then fall as the valve closes.The next time the piston comes up,that is the TDC you are looking for.regards keith

Thanks for all the advise,the only reason i can think why it wouldnt fire is the inlet valve may not have opened quite enough.I did reset the valves second time round and the inlet had a slight amount of slack.
Maybe that was the cause.I did reset the points again though,but not the timing.
Never mind lesson learnt eh!!
