Ken, you should go to Specsavers. The head is smothered in what looks like exhaust cement.

I don't think it is! The head does look to be a bit thick with paint or burnt on oil, but nothing to worry about.
Gregory; Are you looking where the P/rod tubes enter the head casting and expecting to see chrome there too? The tubes disappear inside the iron head casting and there won't be any chrome on view above the third fin above the head gasket. I've read this three or more times now and think I'm looking at a different point each time. Time I had a drink then.

Sorry Dave, wasn't poking fun at you, think we've all been there or are well on our way...

No offense taken Steve, the thought never even entered my head

It's coming along sloooooowly. Been too cold in the garage to get much done, roll on spring.

BTW Haven't got a tradesman's box/chassis kicking around in your museum garage have you?Edited by - DWS on 03 Jan 2011 9:00:38 PM

it's the top couple of fins - I've seen the bike and it is like a black cement - exhaust putty or similar - it fills the top of the block

I read your post on this subject-sorry no I haven't. I still have my Watsonian Avon that will get used again one day.
I wouldn't bother if I were you, unless you could make yours a 500. The extra isn't much but it does make it viable (just) in todays traffic. You have hills round your way don't you?

Hi Gregory

Are you considering buying the Model 16? Be nice to see another Tele/Rigid join the fold. Had my '49 Matchless G3L just under a year now and love it (even though it does need some sorting out). BTW, Why has the vendor decided to sell it? I am guessing he hasn't had it that long, have you asked him?
