12 volt on a lightweight

Post by cbranni »

As my G5 is finished (MOT next week) I'm looking for something else to restore and on the weekend saw this Model 8, it had been converted to 12 volt, the ignition wasn't electronic as it had points and condenser but it had a black box made by FKI (tied on with cable ties) connected to the ignition circuit. Can anyone explain what this box does? it had a three position switch, off, standard and electronic and a red led.
Many thanks
Colin
PS I didn't buy it

It might have been an ignition booster - these retain the points but the condenser is redundant and can be left in situ but disconnected.
They are supposed to stop the points burning out and provide a stronger spark and if it fails you can, theoretically, return everything to standard and get home. I believe the Enfield guys use them on the Indian Bullets rather than converting to full electronic ignition.
