If it's the one that points downward , it's the oil discharge pipe from the release valve . part No STD-755
The valve releases the crankcase pressure when the piston decends in the bore
it does not connect to anything

Commonly known as the crankcase breather pipe, it allows grotty oil to drip on your nice clean garage floor when you return from a ride.

Thanks fellas!
I looked very carefully at my parts book and manual but could find no mention of it, nor in any of the diagrams.
At the moment it is positioned in the vertical position - but I can't remember i f I moved it out of the way at some time. Which way up should it be?

I have just had a look at the archives for a '46 single parts book. I can see your problem, Its not half as informative as the later versions. The Main body and valve element are in the diagrams, but thats all you get.
As mentioned above by G80csp11, it the one that points downwards (towards the carpet)

This is a War Bike!
Thanks for the info - I'm working off the early WW2 parts list - which does not show pictures of all the parts.
Anyway thanks again for all your help.

Does the breather allow suck as well as breathing out? If so it may have been turned upwards if the bike has been used for trials in the past to avoid ingesting water, mud etc. For road use they are usally turned down so that they drip neatly on the garage floor....
