Cylinder base gasket

I'm groping my way to rebuilding an AJS 14 CSR to it's former glory(?) having mistakenly bought it off Ebay. Well one thing leads to another and I completely stripped it etc etc. I'm now on the rebuilding phase and have got to the bit where I put the barrel back on ...

Question 1 what should I put on the base gasket to get a good seal? Grease? Wellseal? Nothing?

Question 2 my (late model) crankcase has a groove with a hole at each end just in front of the pushrod hole, the barrel has only one hole as does the base gasket. Does this matter? It was all together and running when I got the bike!

Any advice much appreciated.

When I rebuilt my Model 8 earlier this year I simply made sure that the mating surfaces were clean and true, then I used a little Hylomar on the gasket, making sure there was none too near the oilway. It runs like a Swiss watch.

I can't answer your second question, I'll leave that to those more experienced than I.
