When I rebuilt my Model 8 engine I followed the advice in Roy Bacon's book and set the tappet clearances to nil (cold). However, reading an article written by John Allen, downloaded from our own Tech.Articles, it states that they should be adjusted when warm, the same advise being given in the Workshop Instruction Manual. So, can anyone please give me a definitive answer.

Nil with the engine warm, not hot is considered correct. With the engine stroke in the correct possition. Perhaps Roy Bacon was being a bit on the safe side, also his instructions giving quieter engine running. If set too hot the engine would rattle a bit untill it got warmed up.

Richard, the risk of setting the clearances with a cold engine is that the pushrods can hold the valves just off their seat when the engine is hot leading to a loss of compression and poor running, in extreme cases the valve/valve seat can be damaged by escaping gasses.
