Starting with just mag

Am reassembling bike and would like to do a short engine test. can i just check if im right in thinking all these bikes need for the engine to run is the mag connected up, and nothing else ie any wiring, battery etc.

Yes, that's the advantage of magneto ignition! Totally independent of battery and so on.

Yep. The mag is a totally self-contained ignition system.
You can check for a spark by kicking over with the plug out and resting on a clean metal surface - engine plate, cyl head etc.
