Oh dear !

Hi everyone....

Well...my first attempt at riding my AJS Model 18 following the Winter recess resulted in disaster !

I managed to start her after some time and quite a bit of tickling ( might have tickled her too much on reflection !)...but on pulling away, it started to splutter and stalled...I starter her again and again, but she kept spluttering and stalling...I rode her for approximately 100 yds, until it died again, so I decided to push her home. It was then I noticed that the exhaust pipe has boiling hot and that the exhaust fumes were coming out of the silencer / down pipe joint. It was so hot that it starter to blister the paint on the nearby frame !

Has anyone any idea what this could be ?......I am bracing myself for bad news !

Thanks

Best wishes
John

Sounds as though the exhaust system is blocked, remove the silencer and try with it off....ignore the neighbours!
Hard work never killed anyone.....but why take the risk?

Could it be the Cable is stuck in the Retarded position.
Fuel will not burn "HOTTER" if its left for some time ??
When you had it running DID it NOT HAVE a LOT OF POWER ?.A sure sign of RETARDED IGNITION ?.

Yes, definitely too retarded or too weak mixture.
That's not a disaster. Simple enough to sort out. It's called recommissioning.

Hi everyone..
Thanks for the advice ( as always !)
In reply to Rex's question, when it was running ( for a second or two) it didnt have much power at all. I had to rev it a lot to keep the engine from stalling.
Only thing I didnt mention was that when I was kicking her over, by the time I went from right side to the left side of the bike to take her off the back stand, it would cut out.....she's never done this before.
Best wishes
