Burman Gear Boxes

Post by cf160 »

I have one complete B-52 Burman box, but I have another one in
pieces such as gears selector forks etc. which is probably missing a few gears and a layshaft I think by just looking at the pieces.
I know an Arial man who has a clutch and most of a burman Box in
bits like mine. I will buy the clutch and the pile of gears from him
if it is likely that the two piles will go togther to make a complete
gearbox . My question to the experts in this field out there is :
Will the gears from the CP box or the BA box actually go together with the B-52 box ,if that's what it really is?

That's a new one on me Douglas, I have never come across this, and I've seen inside quite a few B52's. Is it a common fault then?

Yes, but probably because of no or little oil in the box.I had to fill the worn sides with bronze and grind back to shape.

Were the selector forks worn because the lack of oil caused the gears to spin more than usual when not actually engaged?Edited by - cf160 on 29 Feb 2012 01:49:28 AM

Just metal to metal contact i guess whilst loading the forks during changing. Also a dragging clutch wouldn't help.

My friend says the Burman box is a B-52 and the
clutch was with it mounted on an Ariel Heavyweght . So, I should be able to use the gears to run the clutch with my B-52 box on the model 18, right?

Dear Douglas

I was interested to read your above comments. I have a 1956 G3 which
has lately been giving me selector problems. While changing gears,
the gear lever gets stuck and refuses to budge. I have to lean down and pull up the lever with my hand. Sometimes it comes free. Other times it is adamant and takes a long time to free itself. When this happens in traffic it is highly embarassing. Hv you experienced this problem? My friend says it could be due to lack of lubricant.
